Part 3: Karna and Duryodhan

3) Karna and Duryodhan

It was the time when Karna went to his verandah after he completed the thirty- seventh and seventy-fifth task of Supriya's long list with great difficulty! The sun had completed its tour for the day, and had now been replaced by myriad stars, which dotted the inky canopy. A low, waning gibbous moon hovered tenuously in the twilight firmament, bestowing a very dim light upon the land. It was a cool, windy night; the swaying of trees and rustling of leaves could be heard but not seen, as the encompassing darkness had blotted out all but the faintest light. Briefly, a dark, wispy cloud eclipsed the crescent moon. For a few shadowy moments, it looked like there was a halo around the cloud, a dull aura of lunar luminescence. .A dark curtain fell over the land, twinkling spotlights adorning the velvet texture of the night.  It was a dark, Serene night as the luminous moon gleamed and the white twinkling stars gave harmony at the black, blue sky as if a black piece of velvet had been laid over the sky and sprinkled with shinning gems, and sapphire
Looking up at the inky blackness of the night sky Karna saw it was deep and pristine, ice cold, and the sense of eternity that took over his mind was spiritual in nature, like a rare rapture that few people experience. Of all sizes they were, some were faint yellows, a few dull red, and the whites were like perfect diamonds worth thousands or maybe millions. Then westward, his eye caught one of true blue, and it twinkled at him, just for him it seemed, and He bid it hello with a slow wave of my hand. "But that's just me, connected with the universe where all life is one it makes me feel that No one is ever alone", He whispered to himself with a smile
Just then he saw a shadow approaching him without turning back he could guess that it was no other than his Mitra Duryodhan. He got up hurriedly and looked at his friend with a surprised look as it was not often that Duryodhan came to his palace without informing .Karna knew that something was a huge mess!
Before Karna could ask anything Duryodhan questioned angrily "What the hell is wrong with you? How can you just give anything and everything anybody asks?"
Karna was still surprised to see Duryodhana here "Why not?", he asked him in a surprised tone
"Wh-Why not?!", Duryodhan  spluttered as he was never questioned by anyone in such straight forward manner and then he took his hand tenderly and asked "What was the need for this wow", the anger from his words was evaporated and the thing remaining was just his concern
"It's a good thing to help the needy, isn't it? And I don't think I am committing any sin Mitra!", Karna replied in a low tone
"I don't disagree from this but you can do daans without a vow too... Why a vow?", he asked with concern
"Because it seemed the right thing to do at that time"' he replied quietly
For a moment Duryodhana just stared at Karna with disbelief just as if he told him that the river is red! And then frowned, "Do you know what are you doing?" he asked with his temples folded "Don't act insane Mitra!"
"I am not it's a fair decision", Karna said firmly
"A fair decision...How can you say this? What if someone asks you your throne would you give away that too?", Duryodhan lashed out at him
"No one would ask me this...you can trust people for not being so greedy", Karna replied
"Hmm...you are new to this game of deceit and intrigue ask me my two generations have played it ours is third Mitra my Pitamaha too took a vow he is still paying for it... acting against his wishes...", Duryodhan said calmly his voice reflected his care for Karna
"I don't think so my vow is a different one Mitra! It will help me and the people arround", Karna replied
"Why don't you understand it will make you helpless I can foresee it!" he frowned
"How can it?...it won't Mitra", Karna replied softly
"So you are not going to turn back until you dress up in rags and live in a hut!.", asked Duryodhan
"Mitra I am a sutputra...I have lived that life", He reminded Duryodhan
Now Duryodhana's voice hardened "So you wish to go back to that life of humiliation? Atleast think of your family..."
Breaking him he replied, "My family is already with me and I want you too to support me!"
"Yah correct it's your family after all...as crazy as you", his words were of mixed emotions
"Mitra...", Karna tried to say something but Duryodhan broke out and asked him angrily "What if someone asks you your Kavach and Kundals you would shed off that too? Won't it make you vulnerable??"
Karna first went white and then slowly his face gained colour "What would anyone get from them? I still couldn't understand what good they are going to do to me? And how can these accessories make me vulnerable I fight with my might and power now I think they are taking away credit of my bravery", he said softly but in sharp voice..." But if such condition arrises What do you think... how will I remove it Should I just peel it off or use a knife?", he added with his usual dry humour trying to make light of his worry
Duryodhan had no words in reply He knew Karna wouldn't turn back his vow was his decision, his final say but the Kuru Prince had to convince his friend to see the side-effects of his vow. So he continued instead, "Just tell me one thing...If I come to you tomorrow morning and beg you would you reconsider your vow?", he asked as he was left with no ray of hope
"well umm...but I doubt would you be able to get up at such a early hour Mitra?", Karna asked with a giggle but he couldn't quite catch Duryodhans expressions so he though that he had made a big mistake
Duryodhan stared at Karna for some time and then burst out laughing, "Oh Mitra you caught my laziness very correctly dear", he said trying to stop laughing
Karna had misjudged him he recalled all the incidences where people told him that Duryodhana befriended him for his selfish motives ... he would shrug them off by telling them He cannot judge Duryodhan as he didn't have any specific answer but he knew deep in his heart that his Mitras love was as pure as his family's love for him and this incidence was a proof of his innocent and childish heart
Karna took his hand tenderly, "Mitra I can do anything for you I want you to be my strength not weakness...I want you to stand by me as you did that day in the arena"
There were tears flowing from Duryodhanas eyes and he didn't wish to stop them, he hugged Karna tightly and said "Even if the world goes against me I will always be there for you Mitra" Karna too hugged him back and replied, "You are my biggest strength Mitra...Thankyou", The light of friendship that was reflected from their hug was intense and luminous than even the light of full moon!
...
At the dinner time on dining table Vrushali too  was flabbergasted or rather shocked to see her Arya on time to have meal. Looking at her condition Supriya suppressed her giggle but her eyes danced with merriment .Radha mata's hush stopped her. Karna looked at her and they shared some private message via eyes. Supriya then glanced at Vrushali whose eyes were on her already Vrushali asked What Happened? With her facial expressions Supriya lifted her shoulders impishly like a toddler as if she doesn't know what happened!!

Part 2: Karna and the last Visitor

2) Karna and the last visitor

Next day dawned...
Karna was coming to offer his morning prayers to the sun god. He looked dazzlingly handsome as always. He stood as handsome as ever for donating the needy his revered guru witnessing his charity He noticed that the number of people increased each day as it was morning to noon he was donating. All visiting him could only hear "Granted!" with a beautiful smile of content that would lit his face each time he saw a light of happiness in the visitors eyes!!
Each day the number almost tripled and the queue of the people kept increasing to such an extent that on the fifth day the last visitor couldn't even be seen! As the person approached he was not the least surprised to notice that the person was none other than Supriya!. At the time when Supriya reached him everyone had returned leaving them alone on the bank of the river. He gazed at his wife with disbelief
Bowing low to him Supriya said a bit mischievously, "O mighty warrior, the King of Anga. I hear that here the greatest daanveer of Aryavarta  is donating alms...Will he even donate me?"
He smiled affectionately at her and replied in a low voice, "What should I daan someone who has got this daanveer himself? Answer me dear wife! "
"Well umm...I am no wife here just a civilian respected Angaraj!", she replied quite firmly
"Ok! Tell me what can this simple man do to satisfy you lady?", he too replied in Angaraj's proud tone
"You will give me anything I demand?", she queried
"Anything", he replied firmly "Your wish is my command lady!"
"Hmm...It should be!", she said smiling impishly with a bit mischievousness in her voice but suddenly remembered that she is no wife here and continued in a low tone "But Maharaj are you sure you will give anything I ask?", she queried as she wasn't sure
"Such is my vow...ask anything you want!", he said proudly gazing at the golden disc of  his self appointed guru
"Fine..." she moved a bit close and unfolded a piece of paper that she carried furtively
Karna raised his eyebrows in surprise, "A complete list!", he said in a highly surprised tone
"Oh yes!...when and where would I get chance to catch you this way?", she said smiling winners smile that answered his all unanswered questions that reflected on his highly surprised handsome face!...she continued. "Let's go one by one"
"Hmm...Ok", he said as he was left with no option
"So the first one...My mother recently had a makeover I want you to tell her that she looks beautiful in her new attire! ", she said
"Wh-What?...B-But I cannot lie you know that! ", he said helplessly
"But I am asking you to lie convincingly!...and you have to anyway", she argued and pointing out a finger to Sun she whispered moving close "Your vow Angaraj!", this melted his small signs of protest!
"Ok I will...but only once! Don't expect me to lie everyday till she stay here!", he said in a sharpened voice
"Umm...ok once is enough for me!", she said and he gave a huge sigh of relief!
"So what's next?", he queried
"Second is...I want you to return home and have your meals on time! And not give Vrushu dii stress regarding your meals", she demanded of him
He couldn't help exclaiming, "You both are sautans!...How can your bond be so strong?"
"Arya...Vrushali di is more than a elder sister to me...How can you forget that I could marry you just because of that pure soul devi I am indebted to her forever!", she said her deep respect for Vrushali glinting in her beautiful deep dark eyes.
Karna just smiled in return as he remembered the way Vrushali greeted Supriya when she first entered the Anga palace as his wife .He had expected her to be cold and distant towards his new bride but instead she welcomed her and treated Supriya like her baby sister They enjoyed each other's company, teasing playfully and laughing a lot every now and then the love that was reciprocated by Supriya in equal amounts or rather with interest!...
His thoughts were interrupted by Supriya's  words, "Next one...Once you return home I want our family member not a King keep the intrigue and disputes in the court itself I don't want you to carry it all along!"
"But...Angaraj and Vasusena are no two different people. How is this possible?" he queried
"I just know nothing is impossible for Angaraj!", she answered proudly
"Hmm...B-..."
Breaking she again reminded him, "Your vow Angaraj!"
"This is a difficult task!", He admitted
"Next ones are tougher too!... Should we move ahead" she added impishly
"Let me read them first before I agree on anything!" he said stretching is hands asking her to give the paper
"You have to anyway", she said and handling over the paper to him she whispered in a teasing tone again, "Your vow Angaraj...don't forget!!"
Reading the list he burst out sweating! His wife had caught him correctly in the right place and right time he knew he cannot retaliate now!
"Can we skip the fifth and thirty- seventh", he appealed in toddlers tone
"No!", the answer came in a flash, "Your vow Angaraj!!...you forgot?", she again reminded him
"From where do you get such ideas?", he queried
"Hmm.. it's a women's secret so let it be a secret!", she said in a silly way which made him smile affectionately at her!
...
He returned early in the evening as there was no sabha in the kuru court that day. He found Supriya sobbing like a two year innocent girl as a piece of glass pricked her foot the little pain was making Ganga Jammuna flow out of her eyes. He noticed that each time she touched the glass the little pain would be too much for her to bear as she would withdraw her finger immediately, he moved forward and bent down in order to remove that cruel piece of glass that was making his dear wife cry...but suddenly before he could touch her feet she removed the glass with a "Oouch!" and stood up straight with her back erect but head lowed
"What were you doing Arya?...A husband shouldn't touch his wife's feet!", she whispered in a embarrassing tone
In his mind he recalled the mature Supriya who stood by his decision of vow firmly, one he met on the bank was a bit naughty and caring Supriya and the Supriya sobbing in front of him wasn't a mother of his sons but a pure hearted innocent girl with a small yet unbearable pain and now she transformed herself into a mature wife again suddenly!
She turned back  and started moving towards the kitchen due to the awkwardness she felt Karna noticed that she couldn't walk straight and her foot was still bleeding He took the hold of her delicate wrist her heart started thudding wide, her toes digging the floor and without waiting for her retort he swept her into his strong arms!
"What are you doing?", she asked and continued in whisper "It doesn't suit you Maharaj"
"My third vow dear wife... Now you forgot?", he mimicked her which flashed the memory of the wish list in her mind she looked at him  his eyes were twinkling a shy smile crossed her face her dark eyes had that look again, somewhat teasing, sometimes tender, that made his heart lurch...

Karna TS: Karna's Vows

[Part-1]

The Vow

He stood as usual in a bright sunny day for offering prayers. The fiery ball of light was shining gloriously. and the cloudless sky was as blue as the river flowing below it. The birds were out, chirping their songs… the breeze whistled through the turning leaves of the trees. It was soothing him and warming his eyes...Suddenly some thought crossed his mind. He looked at his self appointed Guru and said with firm determination, “I promise donating alms selflessly. The one visiting wont go empty handed I won’t think twice before giving what he wants Oh Suryadev, be my witness and bless me with your everlasting glory!" The sun beamed upon his face, his gaze was locked onto the golden disc and suddenly the sun shined brightly then ever & threw its golden rays on his disciple as if blessing him which made his Kavach and Kundals shine brightly they reflected an intense light that would blinden one's eyes

He returned early that evening he entered his palace with a thought that How would his family react? but no one was to be seen in the Palace How is this possible? Where are all gone? Is this their silent protest? he thought...but they don't know about my vow! or did the news of my vow reach before me!, he wondered He called a Dasi and queried,"Where is everyone gone?", perhaps it was better to ask than playing guessing games! Dasi replied in a low voice,"Angarani Vrushali along with your parents is gone to the temple, all the Rajkumars have gone to the Vyayamshala for extra workout..."..."So some more time for me to survive!" he whispered Dasi couldn't catch his words yet continued ". ...and Angarani Supriya is adjusting your chamber!"  He waved the dasi to go and started taking slow steps towards his chamber

No doubt he wanted to talk to Supriya regarding his vow. It is better to take his family one by one rather than facing everyone together!, he thought. Moving forward towards his chamber his mind recalled one incidence with this best friend Duryodhana he had laughed when Duryodhan said to him,"No wonder how strong a man is he has to fear his wife! It is his must do duty!!!"..."Its true", he admitted to himself...as he approached his chamber he could imagine the Durgamata avtar of his most introvert and polite wife Supriya!

He entered his chamber where his wife was adjusting bed-sheet. When she saw him she did Pranam and bowed low to him as it was the custom. She noticed his bare foot and extra glow of his Kavach and Kundals and in a surprised tone raising her eyebrows she whispered but a bit loudly"Dare I ask?"
"I made a vow to Sun God today to donate anything and everything!" he said
She moved forward to his bed and pointing at the bed-sheet she queried" How is this ok, good or excellent?"
"Hmm..its go..."
"Its my choice Arya", she broke him
"Its excellent dear... your choice is the best!!",he said immediately and continued  "B-but didn't you hear that I made a vow...I vowed to donate anything and everything I have!", he queried...
"I knew you were crazy when I married you!"  she said with a mischievous glint in her eyes
"I am serious!", he frowned
"I know you are, that's why I love you!", she said impishly hoping she had induced right wine in her words
"It did not surprise you?", he asked with amazement
"No",she replied
"Did you expect this vow of mine?", he asked being puzzled
"Yes! kind of a thing", she replied
"B-but..."
Breaking him she replied, "Arya you don't let anyone leave empty handed, you give them anything they ask. So you take any vow or no it doesn't matter, does it? Its just like you have declared a official statement of the things that you generally do! its no surprise to me instead a well-known fact"
Karna was left with no words Supriya proved herself Karnapatni he thought proudly!
That evening he met unknown side of his family everybody was calm and quiet like the moon. His parents and vrushali were as calm as Supriya was.
"My family is my best protective shield...even more than my kavach",he whispered to himself and a contented smile lit his face!!!
